I’m a manly writer, I guess.

A post over at Nonfiction Readers Anonymous reminded me of something that came up in one of my workshops: gendered writing, and the Gender Genie.

Basically, there’s some kind of algorithm that predicts author gender based on their use of certain words. So I tried the Gender Genie three times, once with a two-page chunk of text from page 50 of my (nonfiction) book, once with a two-page chunk of text selected at random from my book (I just scrolled and stopped somewhere), and a the first two pages of a (fictional) short story I wrote a couple years ago.

All three times, the Gender Genie said (rather overwhelmingly) that I was male. Huh.

So I put in my last two blog posts, and Gender Genie said:

Female Score: 869
Male Score: 1461

The Gender Genie thinks the author of this passage is: male!

I’m not sure what this says about my writing.
